Sunday snowy

OK, not here. It’s not quite cold enough, and I don’t need it right now while I deal with the remainders of flu still hanging on (primarily the nausea … fun). Good thing I had the shot, or it would still be in the ickier stages.

But while I’ve been convalescing, I’ve been streaming videos. I was struck by this one from Simon’s Cat. It reminded me of the first cat I had, Sharon, who was extraordinarily patient and would sit by gopher holes for hours until the doomed critter poked his head out. She was the best mouser we ever had.

Luke resembled Sharon in the face, but not in her patience. He was still a good mouser. Certainly better than Simon’s cat.

  1. Growing up in Vermont, snowy winters were a chance to make money shoveling driveways. Often, I would complete a driveway only to see the town snowplow coming down the road, creating snow piles all along the side of the road, including newly shoveled driveways. Eventually, I learned to screw up my courage and stand at the end of the driveway so the driver would have to swerve to the center of the road to avoid hitting me, also avoiding filling up the driveway. Ah, good times.

  2. Many years ago, I had a female cat who was a good mouser. Since I couldn’t afford to get her fixed, she would get pregnant every year. One year about a week or two before she gave birth to four healthy kittens, I saw her run up a flight of ten steps to catch a mouse (or maybe it was a rat). She wouldn’t let me see what she had caught. She growled at me as if to tell me to stay away because it was hers. I didn’t think she could move that fast when she was that pregnant.

  3. Growing up in Chicago, we always had a White Christmas. When my father shoveled the snow out of our driveway, he said I had to help him shovel the snow. Yes sometimes the snowplows would block the end of the driveway by piling up the snow.

      • True. One of the advantages of living in Arkansas is the hills.

The first time I visited Chicago, it was very snowy, and I ended up sick in the hotel room. Meant I had to miss the tour of Oprah’s studio. ☹️

Still, I did get to see the carving of the parade ice sculptures right in front of the hotel before that. Worth it.
