Sunday jazzy

When I was in college, I sometimes worked reading the news at the campus radio station, KASU, which played both classical music and jazz. It was there that I first heard Leon Redbone, whose voice and sense of humor always made me happy. I would have loved to have seen one of his shows live but never had the opportunity.

Leon died Thursday at the age of 69 (or 127, according to the family’s whimsical death notice). While he was never a huge star, he was beloved by many.

Really, that’s all that matters. Rest in peace, Leon.

He was a character, and will be sorely missed.

  1. Great to hear about your college radio experience. I spent four years at WHRB, the final year DJ-ing a five-night a week jazz show: Jazz Entrée. Went to classes during lulls at the station.

Thanks for the introduction to Leon Redbone; new to me.

  2. I will miss Leon Redbone. I liked his version of “Shine On Shine On Harvest Moon”. I was watching Saturday Night Live the first time he performed on that show. Yes I did enjoy his performance. In the 1990’s, I was a volunteer DJ at KABF, 88.3 FM for a year or two. I was the host of the morning Jazz Venue program on either Wednesday or Thursday.

    • He was an original, even singing the old songs. I like just about everything he did, but I always come back to “When I Take My Sugar to Tea.” That was the first of his songs I heard.
