Sunday stars

Longtime readers know I’m a fan of Chris Mann’s pandemic parodies because he’s absolutely hilarious. But this is a man who was classically trained and is an amazing singer. Basically, whether the guy’s taking himself seriously or not, I’m there.

About a week and a half ago, he took part in the Broadway Smashes Covid virtual benefit for Healthcare Without Walls, which provides health care for homeless women and children in the Boston area. He hosted the event, which included opera soprano Renee Fleming as well as Broadway stars such as Heather Headley and Adam Pascal, who starred together in “Aida.”

Chris sang with Heather probably the most-known song from “Aida” (based on the opera), “Written in the Stars,” written by Elton John and Tim Rice. As powerful as it is in this video, I can just imagine if they’d been able to sing together on stage. This is happy-making music.

Heather Hedley won a Tony for her portrayal of Aida, as well she should have.
In case you wanted to hear the original, here’s Heather and Adam.
