I think most people know I’m not a music snob by any measure; my taste is very eclectic (but yeah, there’s some music I will just never get, like death metal). What is a guilty pleasure for some is likely just pure fun for me.
Exhibit 1: The Barenaked Ladies. I hadn’t listened for a while, and I forgot how much I love the humor in their music and the way they don’t take themselves too seriously. Maybe that makes them not cool, but I don’t care. I love “One Week,” so when I saw that PostModern Jukebox had done a 1940s-style jazz cover, I was stoked (I really love music that has a bit of a jazz feel to it, which Barenaked Ladies, Maroon 5, Nelly Furtado, etc., do). Hope you enjoy this as much as I did. And while you’re at it, take a gander at “Pinch Me,” another great BNL song.
Swinging Sunday indeed.

Wow, something upbeat. How refreshing!

This man who has been a musician for most of his life has watched both videos and he does approve of them.

My favorite song by the Barenaked Ladies is their version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings which they recorded with the help of Sarah McLachlan.

Before one of the younger musicians at church told me about this version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings, I had heard of the Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan but I didn’t know they had recorded some Christmas songs.

If you are a sideman/backup musician such as myself, being a music snob will interfere with your ability to work regularly as a musician. Sometimes you must take what you can get although what you are required to play is not something you like to play or listen to. However, I just spent two evenings at Mount Nebo State Park playing music that I both like to play and listen to for a special dance party sponsored by the Arkansas Country Dance Society. Are my fingers still hurting? YES. I can feel it as I type.

The Society asked me to be there so they could not be accused of playing baseless music.
