On Aug. 26, 1920, Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby certified the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. Thanks to a 1973 resolution by U.S. Rep. Bella Abzug (who just happened to have been born about five weeks before the amendment was certified), we now celebrate Aug. 26 as Women’s Equality Day.

On this day, we remember those who fought for women to gain the right to vote, and those who continue to fight for equal rights.

Who’d have thought we’d still have to march on Washington all these years later?
