I generally don’t do two Sunday music video posts in a row, but this seemed a good time to do so.
On this date in 1994, Jeff Buckley’s Grace was released, featuring what is believed by many to be the best cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” (it’s definitely one of my favorite songs). Despite much critical acclaim for the album and the song, it didn’t get a lot of radio airplay, and sales were slow. It did finally reach gold status in the U.S. in 2002.
Buckley drowned May 29, 1997, in Memphis, where he was working on his second album. He is truly a talent gone too soon.

Would you believe that they actually do an “edited” version of “Hallelujah” at my former sister-in-law’s church? This is how I first heard this song and learned about it. I remember thinking that the bass line was easy to play.

All of the secular references were removed such as a naked woman bathing in the moonlight on the roof and his being tied in a kitchen chair.

I guess they didn’t know that was a reference to Bathsheba. 😏

Yes they know it is a reference to Bathsheba and they felt it was inappropriate for a song praising God. They wanted to emphasize David’s religious side instead of his failures.
