Like a lot of Southern kids, I grew up watching “Hee Haw” and other country music shows on Saturdays, which is where I got my first exposure to not just Minnie Pearl, Grandpa Jones and Junior Samples, but to legends of country music as well as a few artists just starting out. I’m pretty sure it’s where I first heard The Statler Brothers. They were a favorite of our family, and yes, we had the eight-track tapes to prove it.
“Flowers on the Wall” is probably my favorite Statler Brothers song, released before I was even born. I couldn’t find them singing it on “Hee Haw,” but enjoy this version from the Johnny Cash tour with the original lineup (Lew Dewitt was replaced by Jimmy Fortune in the early 1980s due to illness).
I remembered how much I loved this song when I came across a really nicely done version by Joshua Lee Turner and friends. I was left with one question, though: Do these people even know who Captain Kangaroo was?
Great song; two great versions. Sun beaming in my window. Looks like a good day with no ice and snow on the roads. Life is good.

It is. I’m stretched out on the couch with a feisty gray kitten sleeping beside me. ❤️

I still like the Muppets version of Flowers On The Wall almost as much as the original recording by the Statler Brothers. The Muppets version of this song stars Bunsen Honeydew’s unfortunate assistant Beaker as the main character.

I can’t believe I forgot about that.

Although you forgot about the Muppet version of “Flowers On The Wall”, if I had the authority I would say that you are forgiven and may go sin some more.

When I first heard this song, I misheard and mis-understood the lyrics. I thought someone was putting flour on the wall.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that “Statler” wasn’t really their surname. Instead, they randomly choose the name “Statler” from a box of facial tissue.

Pure nostalgia, for sure. There’s another silly song that has this effect on me, perhaps because I heard it so much, “Goodnight Irene.” I can hear it in my head now.

As for the version of “Flowers On The Wall” by Josh Turner and his friends, maybe we should tell them that Captain Kangaroo is originally from Australia?

Although I am a “Northern” child, I still enjoyed watching “Hee Haw”.
