Bits and bobs in quarantine

Quarantine is really getting to me. I’m not sure what day it is anymore. I’m about 80 percent beans and rice at this point. And I can only concentrate in short spurts. So buckle up, because it’s going to be random today.

😷😷😷😷😷

As I posted on the newsroom’s Slack workgroup, I’m staying on-brand.

Advice on wearing masks is confusing, but I and many others are choosing to wear one whenever we’re outside. Medical-grade masks should be saved for those working in hospitals and doctors’ offices, but even there, many are having to improvise because of shortages. Groups across the nation are making masks to help health-care workers, but they shouldn’t have to, nor should states have to compete with each other for limited supplies in a time of pandemic. (Don’t get me started on a certain someone thinking he controls when the states reopen when he won’t make sure states get what they need unless you want to see foaming at the mouth.)

While I’m still waiting on the vented allergy masks to replace the one I already had that disappeared, I have received a more basic (though a bit large) face mask … with cats on it, of course, because one need not have a feline at the moment to be a crazy cat lady (yes, I know, it’s been a while, but the furry one is a hard act to follow). While it won’t protect me as much as needed where germs or my grass allergy is concerned, it will keep me from sneezing on other people and/or touching my face, and it’s cute and washable.

Plus, it will protect me from punches from people who can’t tell I’m cussing them. And believe me, I am.

Pets seem to have adjusted to their people being home all the time (not that they’re happy about it), which means they do what they ordinarily do.

That might mean that in addition to family cats and dogs poking their furry little heads in when you’re teleconferencing, you’ll spot a pup lounging on his dog-sized sofa in the background of a meteorologist’s forecast broadcast from his home, or a cat grooming himself (yeah, that’s attractive) behind that guy anchoring a newscast minus a studio (yes, both of those happened).

Uh, I think your butt’s clean now. You can stop. That’s Duke, by the way, who lives with WKBN morning news anchor Dan Martin in Ohio.

The dog might feel a little guilty (though he’ll get more attention than the forecast). The cat doesn’t care. That news guy was in his shot.

People around the world are taking out the trash while wearing costumes or evening wear and posting the photos or videos on social media. Since that’s the only trip outside many get, they want to take their minds off what’s going on and give others a laugh or two.

To my neighbors: Sorry it was just regular pajamas. All my costumes are at the cleaners.

Meanwhile, a Florida judge had to issue a letter to lawyers in his district to remind them to get out of bed and get dressed for hearings by teleconference.

See, Mama? I told you practicing law was not for me. Having to wear real clothes while working from home … it’s madness!

I can’t say that really looks appetizing, but hey, if it helps bakeries stay in business …

With all the businesses that are closing (temporarily or permanently) due to covid-19, it’s a little refreshing to hear the virus has saved one business, at least for the moment.

A bakery in Finland was faced with possibly having to close its doors forever after covid-19 resulted in the loss of most of its orders last month. The Ronttosrouva bakery in Helsinki was able to pull itself from the precipice by marketing a toilet-roll cake honoring that hard-to-find paper product. Yes, really. The life-like cake made with oat batter and passionfruit mousse covered in white fondant went viral on social media, gaining the bakery hundreds of new orders and two new employees to help with the influx. Here in the U.S., bakeries and supermarkets are getting in on the action, most using more traditional flavors to suit American tastebuds. It’s not really a new idea, but the pandemic has given it new life.

Should I worry about people who appear to be chowing down on toilet paper? Or just the people who might try to use the cake as toilet paper?

Heck, maybe we should put some old Daily Shows on the list too.

Voices columnist Bradley Gitz has spent a couple of columns lately on movies to watch while we’re in isolation. I have to admit there are some on his list with which I don’t agree, and that’s partly because there are a few too many westerns on it for me. But Hitchcock (any, really, though he didn’t mention Psycho, The 39 Steps and others)? Citizen KaneLocal HeroCasablancaO Brother Where Art Thou? Yes, please!

I would add some lighter fare, such as the original animated version of Aladdin with Robin Williams. Will Smith couldn’t come close in the live-action version to competing with Williams’ portrayal of the Genie.

(Yes, both were part of my recent Disney+ viewing. And yes, Williams had issues with Disney’s marketing of the movie focusing on him. But, seriously, his performance is the draw, and the character was based on his standup, sooo …)

I might also add Peter Sellers’ Being There, as well as Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein. God forbid we’re still here by Christmas, but if so, I’d be watching It’s A Wonderful Life, just as I do every year at that time, along with Nightmare Before Christmas.

Being a child of the ’80s, I’d add The Breakfast Club too. Heck, I might even do the detention dance. It’s not like anyone can see me now. No one needs to see me dancing, either.

I knew there was a good reason I got the laptop with a shutter over the webcam.

Since it’s fairly chilly right now, this would be the appropriate outfit to wear anyway. Thanks, Ally!

Since we frequently have people who forget the rules or think they don’t apply to them, a few reminders for Arkansas Democrat-Gazette letter-writers while we’re stuck in quarantine. Most of us in the newsroom are working remotely, like those of you who are able to. What that means for the Voices page is that I won’t be getting snail-mail/fax/hand-delivered letters until this is over, so it’s better to send your letters through the Voices form (arkansasonline.com/contact/voicesform) or to the Voices email (voices@arkansasonline.com). If you take a picture of a handwritten letter to email, please make sure the writing is clear and dark enough for me to read.

Am I not hitting it hard enough? Daaaad!

At the moment, we’re back to having far more letters come in than we can print, so originality, clarity and brevity can really make your letter stand out. Remember that the Voices page isn’t the place for personal, legal or business disputes, nor is it the place to call specific readers idiots or to present falsehoods as facts. Hostility won’t win you any fans, either in a Voices letter or communications with staff. And please, save the sermons for church. A few quotes is fine, but no chapter and verse citations, please; it’s not Bible study.

About 300 words fit in the maximum space we allot for a single letter (it’s an average, not a hard cutoff); a little over we can usually work with, but if you send in 500 words, expect cuts or no publication. Multiple letters from the same person and form letters are bad ideas as well. Letter-writers are allowed one published letter per 30 days; exceptions are sometimes made, but not often, and are at the discretion of Voices staff. If you feel passionate about a cause, write your own letter about it rather than using the cut-and-paste letters found on activist websites; it will have a deeper impact coming from you. One day last week I had to toss the majority of the letters that came through because they were all from the same site, and all sounded the same. Don’t tell us how the site feels about the issue; tell us how you feel and how it affects you.

And while we’re at it, stay safe and sane out there. We need you.

  1. One of the late-night guys (apologies for forgetting who) did a segment on teen slang created during the pandemic and lock-down. The only one I recall is Zoom Room: that portion of your house visible in a Zoom meeting. It looks neat and tidy, even if the rest of the house is a train wreck. Suze had a Zoom meeting last night and I’m scheduled for one today. I think I’ll put on a real shirt in place of my daily T.

Tomorrow is my semi-annual physical exam, which we will do by PHONE. I anticipate the following interaction.

    “You sick?”

    “Nope”

    “Okay”

Stay well, and eat the good chocolate first.

    • Make sure it’s a clean shirt. 😏 Luckily, we don’t really do meetings in opinion, so the only time I did a Zoom meeting was with our Web guy to get me on Slack, and I closed the shutter on the webcam.

Hope that physical goes well. It’s obviously gonna be really stressful. 😉

  2. I am still spending my evenings watching music videos on YouTube. I have been slowly but surely working my way through all of Domenic Scarlatti’s “Sonatas” and am now up to number four hundred out of the five hundred and fifty five he composed.

  3. Brenda have you gotten to the point where we need to serenade you by singing, “They’re Coming To Take Me Away, Ha-Ha” with some help from Napoleon XIV?
