Sunday moms

This isn’t my favorite day, especially since the loss of my mom is still so recent. But for those out there who are moms and still have their moms, this is for you.

  1. With a birthday two weeks after Christmas, I always felt a little shortchanged as a kid. However, my mother’s birthday virtually coincides with Mother’s Day–two days earlier this year. However, we called her Friday (Happy 102nd) and will call again today. Given the pandemic, we haven’t seen her for a couple of years, which we hope to remedy later this year.

  2. It’s a bittersweet day for those of us whose moms are gone, but we can still remember and appreciate what they did for us. My mom survived and raised five of us.

  3. In March of this year, I went to Briarwood Nursing and Rehabilitation on Rodney Parham Road to help one of my musical partners celebrate his mother’s birthday. She is one hundred and two years old and still playing her fiddle. We played some bluegrass and some old time folk music with her for the other residents at Briarwood.

  4. My mother, who was my first music teacher, died three years ago on Christmas Day 2019 at age eighty four. She had to spend the last seven years of her life in a nursing home which specialized in Alzheimer’s patients.
