Sunday hocus (pocus)

I really hope that noise is just Luke’s ghost again. I don’t want to have to dig out my machete.

It’s really hard to believe it’s October already. Which means I should be watching Halloween-type movies, and so far all I’ve watched is the last season of American Horror Story (which was … weird).

At some point this month, I’ll pull out Nightmare Before Christmas, It, Lost Boys and a few other favorites.

And then … Hocus Pocus.

Sure, it’s not the best movie in the world, but there are many reasons it has a cult following now (heck, even members of my Ravenhill guild are fans). There’s a very young Timothy McGee (that’d be Sean Murray for non-NCIS fans) using a very bad English accent. There’s Bette Midler chewing the scenery uproariously and singing. There’s Kathy Najimy riding a vacuum cleaner. There’s Garry and Penny Marshall as the guy the sisters think is Satan and his wife (don’t think about that one too much). And there’s my favorite moment, with Sarah Jessica Parker, that should come as no surprise to my fellow word nerds, considering how much I love words that are fun to say.

At some point this month I will surely sit down with a cup of cocoa, some cookies and curl up to watch one of my favorite Halloween movies. And yes, I’ll sing along to that song (though Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, RIP, did the best version of it).

Sometimes you just have to give in where these things are concerned and give your inner movie critic the night off. That guy’s a real killjoy.
