I'm a retiree in his seventies. That may not be significant to many, since there is a bunch of us Baby Boomers around. However, in the year 2,000, when I received a diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma, I expected to be dead in three to five years.

I didn’t have a father from 4 to 13, so when I became one, I had to figure it out for myself. Happily, my son was good at raising me as a father. For example, he called me at the office on a very busy day. “Dad, I think we should buy a submarine.” “What! I don’t think they sell submarines, and we couldn’t afford one if they did.” “Well, it might be better if we rent one.” “No, I’m sure they don’t rent submarines.” “Well, that’s okay, because I think it would be better if we built a submarine, cause I have some special things we should put in it.” Having told him that I didn’t know how to BUILD a submarine, I eventually promised to go door to door to see if any of our neighbors knew how. (One of the few promises I broke)

I inherited my father’s looks and his brains but not his personality or his love for dancing or gardening. As I like to tell people, “I am not my father. I am my own man and I am following my own path.”
