Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there! May your progeny make you proud and let you grill today if you’re crazy enough to do that in this heat.

I'm a retiree in his seventies. That may not be significant to many, since there is a bunch of us Baby Boomers around. However, in the year 2,000, when I received a diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma, I expected to be dead in three to five years.

I didn’t have a father from 4 to 13, so when I had a son years later, he and I had to work out fatherhood together. Still later, as I’ve seen him with children of his own, I think we did a pretty good job of figuring it out.

My father never seemed to be completely sure what he was supposed to do or how he was supposed to do it but he still genuinely enjoyed being a father and a parent.

As for myself, I think it is safe to assume that I do not have any children of my own because no one has ever shown up with proof of paternity and demanded child support payments.

Having children was something my wife and I never planned, it just happened. But nearly 2 years after our first son was born, we had twin boys. Woah, I said! What comes next, three or 2 squared equals 4? So, that was it. Now, our 3 sons and their progeny are the delight of our lives. Life happens, and sometimes it comes out surprisingly good!

I was Daddy’s girl. And still am even though he’s gone. He was the greatest, in every way.
