I’m pretty new to the fandom of Jon Batiste, who was part of the team responsible for the score for “Soul,” which won an Oscar. When I listen to him, I get a sense of what would happen if Ray Charles and James Brown had a baby. Yes, that’s a good thing as far as I’m concerned.

When Batiste first appeared on Colbert’s show, I didn’t like him. They cast him as Colbert’s sidekick and straight man and he was terrible, I thought. Poor timing, awkward remarks, etc. But at some point they stopped that and just let him be the great musician he is, with just a bit of intro patter each night. So much better. I enjoyed the video. Now I know what the Oscar was all about.
